“Fans of country-rock and female vocalists should find much of interest in Somewhere in the Middle. This aptly named crossover-style disc shows that Christy Bruneau has written some good music and promises to do more of the same.” by Frank Kocher San Diego Troubadour.
Singer-songwriter and two time San Diego Music Awards nominee Christy Bruneau is frequently categorized as a country/folk/blues singer with musical influences from Patsy Cline, The Beatles, Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, The Black Crowes, and many of the singer-songwriters of the 1970’s. She prefers to polish her edgy, distinctive yet familiar sound (she is often likened to Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Sam Phillips, and Jewel) with attention on raw honest introspection and pure playing.
Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona Christy wrote her first song at 23. Hooked on song writing she decided to move and pursue her dream to be a singer-songwriter. Her original plan was to move to Austin, Texas which she fell in love with while visiting a friend in college, but ultimately Christy’s love of the ocean and her love of California drew her to San Diego. Once in San Diego she just so happened to land a couple of blocks from the infamous Java Joe’s in Ocean Beach, a thriving hotbed for aspiring songwriters during the mid to late 90’s. Immediately she took to the stage performing and continued writing more songs.
Since the late 90′s Christy’s dug her groove into the path that songwriters walk to become successful. She has recorded two albums, (she is currently recording her third), performed in venues and festivals throughout Southern California, opened up for artists Xavier Rudd and The White Buffalo, and shared the stage with fellow songwriters Jason Mraz, Anya Marina, Lisa Sanders and Gregory Page. Two songs from her first album Angels of Mercy were placed in the movie L.A. Twister, and she was also cast to sing in part of the movie.
The last two years have so far been the most recognizable for her and her music. Somewhere in the Middle was nominated for “best local recording” in the 2010 San Diego Music Awards. And this year she was nominated for “best acoustic” in the 2011 San Diego Music Awards. Christy teamed up with singer-songwriter and producer Jeff Berkley to record her third album Stories to Tell/Sweet Salvation, a series of songs inspired by her own life, stories passed on from her grandmother about WWII, and stories of people she feels deserve to have their story told.
